Having trouble staying awake during homeroom?  Is your teacher's voice making you drowsy?  Read through our tips to see how you can make sure to stay awake and not miss the important stuff during class time!

1. Eat breakfast.

We will always act like your mom and tell you to eat breakfast.  Your body needs fuel to start its engine (your brain).  Juice and coffee don't count.  Neither does a hash brown or gum! Simple carbs like those in juice or (yikes!) gum cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash, leading to serious fatigue mid-afternoon. Instead, try a granola bar or a piece of fruit or instant oatmeal (yum) - all complex carbs that will keep you awake and alert all day.

2. Don't sleep too late.

Everyone's been there.  You probably stayed up late the night before, catching up on gossip with your friends.  Or, maybe you were playing video games until the wee hours of the morning.  Sure, it seemed fun at the time, but now you're paying for it at school.  Set a bed time for yourself and stay on schedule.  If you are studying late at night, consider going to sleep early and waking up earlier to study.  Chances are, your brain's not really storing all that information anyway since you're so tired!

3. Don't drink caffeine near your bed time.

Skip out on all of the above: coffee, tea, green tea, colas and energy drinks at night.  Anything with high amounts of caffeine and sugar will keep you up past your designated bed time.   Avoid any of the above drinks at least 3-4 hours before you go to sleep.  You can drink your coffee/tea the next morning on your way to school with your healthy breakfast.

4. Drink water.

Good ol' H20 has great benefits.  Coffee, colas, juice give you an immediate boost but also drags down your energy quickly after.  Also, coffee and tea will make you dehydrated.  Your best bet is to carry a bottle of water with you and stay hydrated via H20.

5. Participate in class!

One sure way to keep yourself awake is to start talking.  When your teacher asks questions, raise your hand.  If there is a group discussion, join in. Or, raise your hand and you ask a question. Also, take notes by hand.  Write down everything your teacher is saying, even if you think it's not important.  If you're too busy thinking, talking or writing, you won't fall asleep.

I always usually find myself feeling very tired in my history cl[censored] right after lunch. I also get very thirsty! And I can be guilty for almost all of those things. I will start to eat breakfast again, I can't do much about the tea before bed though, it's a little tradition our family does almost every single night. I could never give it up. But I will try everything else!
